Peaceful Days Off
– Tools for your tool kit to help you deal with those inner demons
“It is essential I decide that I can take time off and tell myself I do not need to keep stacking things into my life”.
These are some of the last words that I wrote in the July newsletter. Since then I have been pursuing my work life balance as one of my major projects. I was very fortunate that in July I had a whole five weeks off. This was the longest break I have had in about six years. I have noticed that I have slowed down a lot, my mind is clearer, my temperament more even, and yes I am experiencing a greater sense of personal happiness.
Having been back in normality for over a month, it is now that I find that the challenge to be true to my project has really begun. As I schedule and take time off I am noticing those inner demons - feelings of guilt, frustration, drive and other challenging emotions that will just not allow me to be at peace.
You may be familiar with some of my thoughts – don’t be so lazy, if you want to be successful you need to be doing, what right do you have to take time out! These intense thoughts and emotions can manifest into uncomfortable feelings in my body or cause me to react negatively to people close to me.
I am a determined character and have a desire to work hard and succeed and also to have some balance with regular time out that I feel OK about and enjoy.
Here are some of the tools I have been using to handle my thoughts, feelings and intense emotions?
v Begin by allowing them to come up and just notice them. Do not give them any extra fuel and they will often just subside and slip away.
v I tell myself that I am worthy of time off.
v I reflect and notice all the great ideas I create from having a fresh mind and time to think.
v I practice gratitude and work towards contentment.
v I also know that this is part of the human condition so I now realise at the time what is going on for me.
Reflecting on and monitoring your thoughts, feelings and emotions assists you to develop your self awareness and helps you to get to know yourself. In turn this gives you a choice over what you wish to experience and how you would like to behave.
If you, your teams or leaders would like to learn more of these skills we have a fantastic fun filled two day workshop Thriving Leaders contact us today to find out how. Until next time remember to:
