I think that absolutely everyone who has a chance should do this two day leadership course. The way you combine the adventure activities with the workshops served to test the team and gave them opportunities to learn and develop as a team. It has been such a positive experience and one that would be of benefit to repeat in the future. The program was challenging and awesome and your instructors are very skilled and friendly. The food was delicious and your organisation impressive. Thanks for the effort in making this a memorable & very useful weekend for our Team Leaders!
Leadership is Everyone’s Business - Reflections on Gold Coast Leadership Workshop at Radisson Resort, Gold Coast, May 2011
One of the important conclusions drawn during this workshop is that no matter what your job is we are all leaders. We are inspired by the notion that leadership is a choice you make and it is a choice available to anyone. You don`t need a title as you can choose to be a leader. The world needs more leaders in business and community. Leadership is the responsibility of everyone and we witnessed all sorts of people across Australia choosing to be leaders during the recent floods. People helped others out of their homes, performed rescues and took care of animals voluntarily.
What is Leadership?
Leadership is about taking action, it’s about influencing and mobilising others.
Last week I was on my way to a leadership workshop I was facilitating in Brisbane and I overheard two friends talking beside me as we walked through the busy CBD. I could not help overhearing the woman say to her male friend “So you must be pleased to be out of your office on training for two days so you don’t have to be around your obnoxious boss!” The man agreed with a nod. Did you know the number 1 reason people leave organizations is due to poor leadership.
Top 3 Tips for Influential Leadership:
1: Build strong relationships - Leadership is all about relationships
-Get to know the people you want to influence and know some personal things (at least 4) about them. Be aware of yourself and your mood and the impact your behaviour has on others.
Develop empathy with your team members and demonstrate you can see the world from their point of view. This is not about being warm and fuzzy but understanding them, their job, their strengths and the challenges they face.
People follow leaders they trust. Build trust with your people by modeling trustworthy behaviours. Also when you trust your people they will trust you. Model personal integrity which means you walk your talk and do what you say you will do.
Encourage and praise your people so that they feel valued. Look for things they do well and say for example “well done, you did a great job with that client” or “thanks for the input you had with that project”.
2: Believe in yourself and be confident
-You can have the most influence with others when you are in a confident state. Do things that allow you to utilise your strengths and result in you feeling confident.
3: Have a strong vision for the future
-As a leader picture how you would like the future to be, create a compelling vision and share that vision with the people you want to influence. Ensure they understand your vision and discuss strategies with them about achieving the vision. The more they are involved in developing action strategies the more ownership they have and therefore commitment.
Most importantly-Have Fun with your people-Teams that laugh together stay together
