Four Easy Strategies to Help you Thrive during Change
Everybody is experiencing constant change and as humans we feel comfortable when things remain the same. Change is something you can guarantee and the better you are able to adapt to change the greater your chances are of success. Use these four strategies and notice how easily you and your team thrive during your next change.
Be Flexible
Change requires flexibility in your thinking and your actions. Become aware of how you resist change and accept that change is a part of life. As you change your mind set and become more flexible you will adapt to change more easily – a quality valued by your employers and colleagues.
Understand your Strengths and Challenges
One of our biggest fears during change is we might look incompetent. When you know your strengths you can decide what you can contribute during the change process. Likewise, when you understand your challenges you know the areas you need to develop. Imagine you have been coaching soccer for the past ten years and your boss informs you soccer is no long a school sport and will replaced with basketball. You are now required to coach basketball. You have many strengths to be able to do this because both games are about outscoring the opposition using strategy and team skills. On the other hand you will need to develop your knowledge of basketball specifically.
Communicate Clearly
Change brings uncertainty which can create fear and you can minimise this by talking to others about the change. If you are uncertain and need information, don’t just sit back and wait for the change to happen around you, ask your boss and others for information. If you are involved in the change talk to those around you. Remember-leadership is everyone’s business and can happen from any position or job responsibility!
Ask Empowering Questions
By asking empowering questions like “How can we move forward?” or “How is my action aligned with our company vision?” rather than disempowering questions such as “Why do we always have to change things?” - You will receive a positive action oriented response from your brain every time you ask an empowering question.
Remember in any change there is always an opportunity – so ask yourself and your team “what is the opportunity here?” or “what is good about this?”
Action Exercise
Think of a current or recent change – Where do you need to be more flexible? How could you change your mindset? What are your strengths? Where can you contribute? What are your challenges? What areas do you need to develop? Who do you need to communicate with? What is one empowering question you could ask yourself or your team?
