Moments of Contentment this Festive Season.
The greatest moments in life are when you feel true contentment. Can you connect with that feeling? How often do you catch yourself saying things like: “this is hard”, “I will never get this done”, “I wish I didn’t have to go to work, cook dinner, etc etc... Recently I had a challenging and frustrating experience with a government department I regularly deal with. In a moment of self awareness I noticed that as a result of my negative thoughts and feelings my rational brain was not working and I was reacting to the person I was speaking to. In that moment I thought about the other person’s experience and what I appreciated about them and the situation. As my brain was flooded with these positive thoughts I felt some relief and I was able to suggest a positive solution which is now working well for myself and my family.
The secret to true contentment is very simple....are you ready for it? Every time you think of it during each and every day notice the things in your life you appreciate, notice the things and people you love and who loves you. Also notice what is working in your life, at work and in your relationships. Remember to tell the people in your life what you appreciate about them too and this will contribute to yours and their good feeling. It feels great when you are appreciated or praised, so pass this around to others in your life. Thank your children for their patience, the joy they bring you, the support your partner gives you, the help your parents give you, the work and commitment your team members contribute and smile at your neighbours. When you focus on what works well, what you appreciate and count your blessings every day, life actually gets better and better and easier, more fun and exciting. You will notice as you do this more of the great things and good times will come your way.
Christmas and Solstice are fast approaching and what a big year 2010 has been! As I reflect on the year I am aware of the so many positive things that have occurred and the hundreds of things I appreciate. As I think of everything I appreciate I instantly feel calm, confident and have a strong sense of purpose.
In summary remember to ask yourself: “What is working well?”; “What am I proud of?”; “What do I appreciate?” As you spend time with your family during the festive season notice what you appreciate about them too and let them know!
