PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT

Performance Management is a strategic tool used to promote and develop an effective organisation. It ensures that the efforts of individual employees are focussed on the priorities set out in your organisational plan. It directs people’s energy towards effectiveness and away from merely being busy. The success of your employees depends on a clear performance management process which recognises accomplishments and supports ongoing professional development of each employee. It also provides a means to recognise and reward good performance and to recognise and manage under-performance.

Managers are responsible for coaching employees, giving feedback based upon goals set at the beginning of the performance cycle. As well, together, managers and employees review progress periodically throughout the year and at the end of the performance cycle.

Corporate Training Oz can help you:

  • Develop and implement a Performance Management or Review System that suits your business or organisation and your employees

  • By training your managers, supervisors and leaders to take the pain out of performance reviews and transform them into beneficial conversations leading to improved performance and productivity

  • Where your leaders must have those ‘challenging conversations’ train and coach them to conduct the conversations in an empowered and constructive way. We regularly run workshops on “The Art of Having Challenging Conversations” and “Coaching Skills, the Art of Asking your Team Members Quality Questions”  which will equip you and your managers to have so called ‘difficult conversations’ with style.

Our Inspiring Performance Management and Review Model shows how interrelated strategies, activities and training improve the performance of individuals, teams and organisations. When an organisation has clear policies, procedures and values in place this provides a solid framework to inform performance management and support for leaders to undertake challenging conversations. The development of a strong and constructive organisational culture also supports the performance management process. When there is a culture of recognising success, constructive conversations, coaching and ongoing professional development managers will effortlessly undertake positive performance management resulting in high performing employees. At Corporate Training Oz our Consultants can assist you to develop this framework and strengthen your organisational culture, an essential ingredient for success.

A Performance Management and Coaching Workshop covers: how to plan, review, and coach people for great performance outcomes for your organisation and the individual; how to set SMART Goals; develop key performance result areas; key performance indicators; give and receive feedback; holding people to account; coach for maximum input and ownership of outcomes; handling difficult situations and conversations; how to choose when to coach and when to counsel.

Recognising Good Performance

Why is it important for me to recognise good performance? After all they are just doing what they are employed to do aren’t they?

Recognition

·         Good work that is noticed will be repeated

·         Helps employees feel connected to the bigger picture

·         Gives your people a sense of appreciation and inspiration to do more

·         Not all employees want to be recognised in the same way-tailor recognition to the employee for maximum impact, ie., some like to be told publicly and others may prefer a private email.

How do I recognise good work?

·         Be specific Example: “I liked the way you handled that challenging situation with that client this morning by remaining calm and listening to her vent. Great job!

·         Tell your employee the impact their great work had Example: “When you filled out the paperwork so completely you saved me an hour. Thank you.

·         Give positive feedback as soon after the event as possible.

·         Give recognition whenever you see good work being done.

Types of Recognition

·         Praise – Identify specific actions you found worthy of praise

·         Say please often – social niceties are appreciated by everyone

·         Say thank you for hard work and contribution

·         Ask your employees about their interests. Show them you value and are interested in them. They will be interested in you and your business goals.

·         Offer employees who perform well flexible schedules when possible

·         Offer small rewards and gifts from time to time

·         Take employees to lunch, share meals or order in takeaways occasionally

·         Create seasonal fun such as birthday treasure hunts, secret Santa

·         Bring in treats for employees such as home baked cakes, fruit platters or chocolate

·         Offer variety in role such as representing organisation on committee
